Die Liebe zu Laura dient dabei lediglich als Deckmantel der – damals als sündhaft geltenden – Ruhmsucht, sowie als Point de Départ für ein in Wahrheit streng durchkomponiertes ästhetisches Werk, mit dem sich Petrarca deutlich von den im Mittelalter vorherrschenden Liebesdiskursen zu distanzieren vermag. Im Folgenden werde ich eruieren, wie die Figur der Laura und die scheinbar unerfüllte Liebe zu ihr als Instrument der Selbstinszenierung geschickt eingesetzt werden, ohne welches Petrarca das Streben nach Gloria nicht in diesem Maße hätte entfalten können.

Dazu werde ich zunächst auf die Entstehung der Laura eingehen, die bereits im Secretum als auch im Bucolicum Carmen erwähnt wird, und sowohl ihr Erscheinen als auch ihre Funktion im Canzoniere detailliert analysieren. Im Anschluss daran werde ich anhand von Beispieltexten Petrarcas Egozentrismus durch die affetti contrari demonstrieren, sowie die Rahmenkonzeption des Canzoniere genauer beleuchten, bei der wir eine deutliche Akzentuierung der Gloria im In Morte Teil vorfinden werden. Abschließend werde ich Petrarca kurz im Kontext anderer literarischer Liebeskonzeptionen seiner Zeit, respektive der provenzalischen Troubadourslyrik, der Scuola Siciliana und des Dolce Stil Novo, situieren und zeigen, dass Petrarcas Narzissmus und seine Selbststilisierung im Canzoniere ihn als Wegbereiter einer neuen Epoche, des Rinascimento, auszeichnen.

I liked his memoir. It is the story of a relationship, a birth, a serious illness, and a long medical battle. I must say that I am a man and a parent, and enjoy books about young families, but a good amount of this is about the author's relationship with the father of the child (a man who did not want a child and did not meet his daughter for a long time). I did feel that I was intruding on a woman-to-woman or mother-to-mother dialogue at times, but the author is a talented writer, and I liked that way she told everyday stories. I could also empathize with the stress of having a sick child. With most memoirs, the narrator seems perfect, as she tells the story from her own perspective (and most people think they were/are right). Harpham, though, is a refreshing exception. She often talks of her reactions and interactions where it is clear she was not right, but it is an honest portrayal of how she felt at the time. She and the father of her child, and the children in this book, really come alive as individuals. I read the audiobook, and the author narrates this. She is a professional theater person, and her reading is clear and animated, but it is read so slowly at times, and overly enunciated. It sometimes felt that another person was reading her book rather than the author telling her own story. I would recommend the written book. Overall, I enjoyed this heartfelt memoir.

A fine reminder that there is more that unites us than divides us. I began this book with my book club, thinking I wouldn't be able to relate to much of it . How could I? My two children are and always have been healthy. I've never endured anything like what the author has. Not even with siblings, or parents. But I was so wrong. There is so much in this book that is so resonant. Parenting is parenting, and we never know what challenges we'll be faced with. This beautifully written book is a glimpse of life - sometimes hard, sometimes beautiful, always real - lived by one woman, as spectacularly imperfect as any of us, and her family. I highly recommend this book!

A parent's worst nightmare - walking through the hell of medical uncertainty to bring your sick baby back to health - is told with poignancy, humor and clarity. I was surprised to find myself laughing or crying, even when sitting in the middle of puzzled strangers. Heather Harpham holds onto your feelings and carries you on her relentless and, gratefully, victorious journey, and you are far too enthralled with every step to let her go.

This book captures the ups and downs, ebbs and flows, of life. Everybody who reads this will recognize themselves somewhere in the book. The thing I personally appreciated most is the humility shown that can change us as we face adversity. The patience and selflessness demonstrated here was impressive and yielded an amazing, HAPPY, and fought for end that doesn’t come without work and sacrifice. Well written.

As I read this memoir, I was thrown through every emotional hoop imaginable. Heather Harpham's exquisite prose pushed and pulled me through a time in her family's life that she shared with astonishing truth and courage. The laughs out loud and the tears rolling down my face were testimony to this personal, suspense filled and profound true story. Prepare to not put it down until you've read the publisher's note on the very last page.

I totally enjoyed reading this book. It wasn’t a “ I can’t put it down” read but something I looked forward to when I had time to absorb the words. It’s s book I’ll think about for a long time. As a Mother, I was deeply moved by writers’ ability to the demonstrate strength, endurance and truth during a difficult time we all never want to face.

I LOVED this book. The detail in the everyday life of a family with a child going through bone marrow replacement was stunningingly heartbreaking. The extended family and friends support was heart warming. This was a portrait of a family in crises who survived and even thrived.

Read this myself and then bought a copy for mom for christmas. A very well written story that took me to a world that I have no reference of and made me feel for the characters. What more can you ask of a boook?

The book goes beyond separate connectional neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, neuroimaging, neuropsychiatric, and computational neuroscience approaches, by combining evidence from all these areas to formulate hypotheses about how and what the cerebral cortex computes. As clear hypotheses are needed in this most important area of 21st century science, how our brains work, the author has formulated a set of hypotheses about the principles of cortical operation to guide thinking and future research.

The book focusses on the principles of operation of the cerebral cortex, because at this time it is possible to propose and describe many principles, and many are likely to stand the test of time, and provide a foundation for further developments, even if some need to be changed. In this context, I have not attempted to produce an overall theory of operation of the cerebral cortex, because at this stage of our understanding, such a theory would be incorrect or incomplete. Excellent topic coverage - I especially like the coverage on technology selection & management, supply chain management, and maintenance management.



I like the way the appendices are handled at the end of the text and not scattered throughout the text. Gaither/Frazier has done a good job of integrating the quantitative methods used in POM into the regular text material rather than treating them as appendices.

I am using the Gaither and Frazier textbook this semester because I was pleased to see a chapter on maintenance planning in an Operations Management book. By having the subject included in a textbook the students see that it is now important. I introduce engineering terminology such as MTBF, MTTR, and Availability measures. I feel it is important because these are specs purchasing agents or sales reps will need to become familiar with. This chapter should always be included in a course that teaches the concepts of JIT manufacturing.

The strengths of Gaither and Frazier include: (1) the internet assignment, industry snapshots, and wrap-ups are excellent bridges between theory and practice; and (2) the visual aids, such as the colors, images, and graphs, are used so nicely that really help materials flow and catch the reader's attention.

About the Author
Norman Gaither is Professor Emeritus of Business Analysis and Research at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. and MBA from the University of Oklahoma and his B.S.I.E. from Oklahoma State University. Prior to teaching, Professor Gaither worked at Olin Corporation, where he held the positions of chief industrial engineer, plant manager, and director of a multiplant operation, and at B.F. Goodrich Company as senior industrial engineer.

Professor Gaither's writings on a wide range of operations management topics have appeared in Management Science, Decision Sciences, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Simulation, Journal of Purchasing and Materials Management, IIE Transactions, Journal of Cost Analysis, and International Journal of Operations and Production Management.

Dr. Gaither has served on the editorial boards of several highly respected journals in the operations management field. He is also an AACSB Federal Faculty Fellow.

Greg Frazier is an Associate Professor of Production and Operations Management in the Department of Information Systems and Management Sciences at The University of Texas at Arlington. He is an APICS Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management (CFPIM) and has served as a Faculty Fellow at The Boeing Company. Other teaching experience includes Texas A&M University, University of Oregon, and Harvard Summer School at Harvard University.

Professor Frazier received a BS in mechanical engineering and an MBA from Texas A&M University. His Ph.D. in production and operations management is also from Texas A&M, where Norman Gaither chaired his dissertation research.

Dr. Frazier's long association with Norman Gaither has resulted in co-authored publications in several journals, including Journal of Operations Management, International Journal of Production Research, and Production and Inventory Management Journal. He has also published in journals such as International Journal of Production Economics, Journal of Productivity Analysis, IIE Transactions, and Business Horizons.
