I had never heard of this book before I found it on Amazon and looked at reviews. My granddaughter is 8 and is an advanced reader with an outstanding vocabulary, but she is still only 8 and is not ready to process disturbing material--and I don't want her to internalize it! So I choose books and read them myself. This 1935 book has a bucolic setting in Hungary, but the farm is not idealized, and the characters all work hard at chores. The two children have engaging personalities, naughty in a Tom Sawyer kind of way, and the action is lively and dangerous but no one is ever seriously injured. The only possibly disturbing sequence is in a storytelling segment about Atilla the Hun (these are after all Hungarian characters) in which his military history is told in plain terms. Raiding and fighting and killing are mentioned, but not raping. The context is a legend that the Milky Way is Atilla's army, which can come back from the sky. All in all, the story is encouraging, uplifting, wholesome, and entertaining--but in no way namby-pamby or prissy. This would be a good read-aloud book.
In 1964, my third-grade teacher read this book to us. The whole class was held spellbound by the tale of the headstrong Hungarian city girl who is sent to live with her uncle, aunt, and cousin in the country. Recently, I bought it and read it with my own eyes for the first time. It still holds up!
I was first exposed to this story in 5th grade back in the 1960s. It's been one of my favorites ever since. As a teacher, I read the story to my class. They were enthralled by the adventures of Kate & Janci. I used the story as part of my multi-cultural program. Besides giving a glimpse into what the world was like when their grandparents and great grandparents were young, the way the author incorporates customs and folk lore into her books expands the horizons of my students on many levels. Through the years I've shared this book with hundreds of children in many grade levels. Both boys and girls can relate and Kate is not hampered by out-dated expectations of being a "good" girl. She is as robust and couragous as her male cousin. I'm now buying this and the sequel, The Singing Tree for my god daughter. Whether they can read the adventures for themselves or are listening to the tale as part of a nightly installment, children will enjoy participating vicariously in the adventures of Kate & Jansi.
Wonderful children's chapter book, with lush pencil illustrations of Hungarian farm life prior to (and in the next volume during) WWI.One of my top 10 children's chapter books. The book is great for reading out loud for 10 and under, or for beginning readers. The author has a feel for the rhythm of seasons in country life that any farmer across the world would appreciate.
Kate Seredy's "The Good Master" is a charming historical novel which chronicles the adventures of Jansci and Kate, young cousins growing up in pre-world war Hungary. The mischievous, uncontrolled Kate is sent to Jansci's father's farm for reforming, and at first doesn't like the idea one bit. However, she eventually finds healing and peace through encountering the natural beauty of the country, the joy of handling animals, and the unselfish love of Jansci's family. This book is intended for a 10-12 year old audience, but could be read aloud to a younger child, or enjoyed by an adult. Seredy's prose is extremely well written, and the adventures of the cousins touching and humorous by turns. After reading the "Good Master", you will almost certainly find yourself purchasing the sequel, "The Singing Tree" .
I was delighted to find a copy of this book with illustrations by Kate Seredy - Her choice of color based in traditional Hungarian design is as much a part of the pre WWI story of life on the plains of Hungary. I read this story as a child after I first read 'The Singing Tree.'During 1939 and 1940 we were hearing bits of what was happening in Europe and the story in 'The Singing Tree' although about an earlier world war, brought the news down to my eight and nine year old level - I admired how the women and children kept life going until the Uncle returns. Then I had to read 'The Good Master.'There are many publications of 'The Good Master,' a story about life on the Hungarian plains, with a cover illustration taken from inside the book. However, for me it was not the same until I found a copy of the original illustrated cover with all the color and tradition of Hungarian folk art to pass on to the child of a friend. Also, there is something special about giving a gift of a used book. There is wonder in knowing someone had read the story and you are following, holding a book just as they held the book while reading the same story.
The rave reviews of this book are true. Kate Seredy (prounounced SHARE-ed-ee) did a wonderful job on this book. My children (a girl, 9, and a boy, 6) both really loved this book, and it's not always easy to find stories that suit both of them at the same time. To tell the truth, I think my wife and I fully enjoyed the book as much as the children. Buy the hardcover, because it's likely to become a well-worn favorite.I really can't praise Seredy enough on her work in this book - it's full of life, makes good points and lessons, is fun and humorous, a well-told story, and has beautiful charcoal illustrations by the author. (I only wish these drawings were presented in a finer fashion, as befits them. One can only hope this will be remedied in a future edition.)Apparently, Seredy started out as an illustrator of children's books, and only began writing late in her career. Too bad, because she is a master of both crafts, and one suspects there is a strong autobiographical element in the charming but mischievous character of Kate. Whatever its genesis, this is a spellbinding tale. Buy this book - your children will love having it read to them, and you will love reading it.
